Trauma Counselling in Kelowna

Online Trauma Counselling in Kelowna

What happened to you matters, and so does how you’ve been carrying it. Trauma can leave you feeling on edge, disconnected, or stuck in the past, even when you’re doing your best to move forward. If you’ve been wondering why you react the way you do, or why healing feels so hard, there is nothing wrong with you.

At Your Wellness Counselling, I offer a safe, gentle online space for people in Kelowna to be heard, believed, and supported. You don’t have to carry this alone, and you never have to share more than you’re ready to.

Understanding what trauma is

Trauma is not defined only by what happened. It’s about how your mind and body responded to something overwhelming, frightening, or painful, especially when you didn’t feel safe or supported. It can come from a single event or from experiences that happened over time, and it can stay with you long after the danger has passed. Trauma can show up in many ways:

  • Fear, shame, guilt, anger, sadness, or feeling numb and emotionally disconnected

  • Feeling constantly on guard, being easily startled, trouble sleeping, nightmares, tension, or unexplained aches and exhaustion

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, difficulty concentrating, or believing you’re unsafe, broken, or to blame

  • Avoiding reminders, pulling away from others, struggling with trust, or feeling like you’re just surviving rather than living

These responses are not signs of weakness. They are your mind and body’s way of trying to protect you, and they make sense in light of what you’ve been through.

Types of Trauma

Every person’s experience is unique, and your story deserves to be held with care. Some of the experiences I support people with include:

Single-Incident Trauma

A specific event such as an accident, assault, medical emergency, or sudden loss that changed how safe the world feels.

Complex and Developmental Trauma

Ongoing or repeated experiences, often in childhood, such as neglect, abuse, or growing up in an unsafe or unpredictable environment.

PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Lasting effects of trauma, including flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance.

Relational Trauma

Wounds from betrayal, emotional abuse, or unhealthy relationships that affect how you trust and connect with others.

Grief-Related and Traumatic Loss

Losses that were sudden, violent, or deeply distressing, leaving you in shock or unable to find peace.

Occupational Trauma

The impact of repeated exposure to distressing events, including for military members, first responders, and veterans.

Medical Trauma

Distress following serious illness, injury, or difficult healthcare experiences.

Understanding what trauma is and the different kinds of trauma can help you finally put a name to your struggle. It is possible to heal from trauma, and the hardest part is over.

How Therapy Can Help With Trauma

Healing from trauma begins with safety. Together, at a pace that feels right for you, we can:

Build safety and stability first

Create a foundation of trust and calm before going anywhere near difficult memories.

Settle your nervous system

Practice grounding and mindfulness tools that help your body come down from high alert and feel more at ease.

Reclaim your sense of self

Rebuild trust, confidence, and connection, and step into a future that isn’t defined by what happened.

Make sense of your feelings Understand how trauma has shaped your thoughts, emotions, and relationships, so you can respond to yourself with compassion instead of criticism.

Process at your own pace

Gently work through painful experiences in a way that feels manageable, without pressure to relive every detail.

Taking the first step can feel frightening, and it’s also an act of great courage. Whenever you’re ready, I would be honoured to walk alongside you with patience, kindness, and without judgment, toward healing, growth, and resilience.
